The term "topper" comes from the English language and is derived from "top," meaning surface or upper part. It is often referred to as a "top mattress," which is very thin and placed on top of the actual mattress.
Toppers are frequently used with box spring beds, as these consist of three components: the box, the mattress, and the topper. Nowadays, toppers are increasingly being used with traditional bed systems featuring slatted frames and mattresses, as the topper enhances the overall comfort and supports the mattress’s function. Additionally, a topper protects the mattress, thus increasing its lifespan. Toppers are also commonly used to eliminate the so-called "visitor’s gap," which occurs between two adjacent mattresses.
It’s important to note that a topper cannot compensate for an unsuitable mattress and should not be used as a replacement for a mattress.
