STAPELLIEGE – the original by Rolf Heide

Product information "STAPELLIEGE – the original by Rolf Heide"

STAPELLIEGE – the design icon by Rolf Heide, since 1966

A design that has lost none of its clarity to this day: Rolf Heide created the STAPELLIEGE in 1966 as an ingenious space-saver – a bed that can be stacked, doubled up and transformed. It is still made today in Germany in the workshop of Müller Möbelwerkstätten and was honoured with the German Design Award in 2019. At Etage 7 you get the original – now in considerably more sizes and colours.

An idea from 1966 – still just as good today

When Rolf Heide designed the STAPELLIEGE, his thinking was radically simple: a bed that can be stacked as soon as you need the space for something else. No frills, just a clever form in curved plywood. It is precisely this reduction that makes it a classic to this day – handmade, piece by piece.

One piece of furniture, many lives

  • Guest bed: up to 10 beds can be stacked on top of one another to save space.
  • Double bed: two beds side by side (only 3 cm apart) – firmly joined with a centre beam.
  • Children's room: low entry height, with an optional guard rail.
  • Daybed & sofa: with back cushions, the bed becomes a bench seat.

Workshop quality you can see

Plywood/multiplex, glued in 9 layers, 15 mm thick – with the characteristic, visibly oiled plywood edge. It comes apart into four wooden parts; fittings and tools are included. A piece of furniture for life, not a throwaway product.

The visible plywood edge – the hallmark of the STAPELLIEGE.

Klassik or Komfort?

  • Klassik – bed height 23.5 cm (40 cm when stacked). The timeless original look.
  • Komfort – bed height 27.5 cm (44–48 cm when stacked). 4 cm higher: easier to get up from and room for taller mattresses.

The right mattress & the matching slatted frame

For the STAPELLIEGE we recommend our natural latex mattresses – lastingly elastic, breathable and dimensionally stable. Ideal for both Klassik and Komfort is the Basicline in 14 cm (in three firmness levels). Add a matching slatted frame – the easiest way is to choose one of our coordinated complete sets straight away.

Important before you order

  • Scope of delivery: the bed frame only. You choose the slatted frame and mattress separately (they are shown in many of the product images for illustration).
  • Mattress & slatted frame compatibility:
Klassik: roll-up slatted frame + mattress up to 140 mm or solid wood frame + mattress up to 100 mm.
Komfort: roll-up slatted frame + mattress 140–180 mm or solid wood frame + mattress up to 140 mm.
  • A centre beam is recommended from a width of 120 cm and is essential with two slatted frames (double bed).
  • Precise fit: the Müller slatted frames with a frame construction are milled to fit the STAPELLIEGE exactly – slatted frames with frames from other makers generally do not fit. Best to order it as a set from us.

Frequently asked questions about the STAPELLIEGE

What is included in the delivery?
You receive the plywood bed frame including fittings and the tools for taking it apart. You choose the slatted frame and mattress separately – or take one of our coordinated complete sets straight away.
Which mattress fits – and how tall may it be?
That depends on the model: Klassik takes up to 140 mm (roll-up slatted frame) or up to 100 mm (solid wood frame), Komfort 140–180 mm (roll-up slatted frame) or up to 140 mm (frame). Ideal for both models: our Basicline natural latex mattress in 14 cm.
What is the difference between Klassik and Komfort?
The bed height: Klassik measures 23.5 cm, Komfort 27.5 cm. Komfort makes it easier to get up and leaves room for slightly taller mattresses. The look and the stackability are identical.
Can I join two beds to make a double bed?
Yes. Two single beds stand side by side only 3 cm apart and are firmly joined with a centre beam. From a width of 120 cm we generally recommend the centre beam; for a double bed it is essential. The easiest way is via our double bed set.
How many beds can be stacked?
Up to 10 beds can be stacked on top of one another to save space – ideal for making guest beds disappear when they are not in use.
Which slatted frame fits?
The Müller slatted frames with a frame construction are milled to fit the STAPELLIEGE exactly and sit flush in the bed frame. Slatted frames with frames from other makers generally do not fit – roll-up slatted frames, on the other hand, do. If in doubt, order it as a set.
Is the STAPELLIEGE suitable for a children's room?
Yes. The low entry height is child-friendly, and a guard rail is available on request. Thanks to the many colours, it fits perfectly into a children's room.
Where is the STAPELLIEGE made?
In Germany, in the workshop of Müller Möbelwerkstätten – by hand and with durable material quality. In 2019 it was honoured with the German Design Award.

Further sizes (e.g. 120 × 210/220, 100 × 220) as well as further surfaces (the rest of the Müller colour collection, beech/birch/oak/walnut veneers, solid oak) are available on request – just get in touch.

Latex mattress Basicline Medium 14cm H2

Medium-firm and point-elastic: the Basicline Medium — noticeable contouring at the surface, secure support in the core, suitable for all sleeping positions. Its core of 100 % natural rubber (firmness 2, density 75 kg/m³) combines two qualities that often rule each other out in synthetic foams: a soft, body-hugging surface and a stable, supportive core. So the mattress responds reliably even when you change position during the night. Who it suits Back, side and stomach sleepers — even with changing positions Normal-weight sleepers with a medium comfort preference Recommendation: a springy slatted frame or sleep system — the slim build benefits from good suspension, which also channels moisture downwards Construction & materials Core: perforated 100 % natural latex (pincore latex), total height approx. 14 cm Cover: cotton drill quilted with new wool (winter side) and cotton (summer side) Tested for harmful substances and certified by eco-INSTITUT Benefits at a glance Point-elastic on your side, supportive on your back and stomach High compression resistance: keeps its shape, year after year Open-pored and permeable to moisture — a naturally dry sleeping climate Would you rather lie softer or considerably firmer? Then Basicline Soft or Firm are the alternatives; the Comfortline offers more comfort height at 20 cm. We are happy to advise you — by phone or in our showroom at Kantstraße 13, Berlin-Charlottenburg. You can read more about natural latex in our “Good to Know” section.

Latex mattress Basicline Firm 14cm H3

Firm, flat, rock-stable: the Basicline Firm is for everyone who wants to lie on the mattress — not in it. With firmness 3 and a density of 90 kg/m³ it is the firmest mattress in our Basicline. The dense natural latex core lets you sink in only a little and noticeably straightens the spine, especially in the back position — the intervertebral discs can relax. The surface still remains point-elastic: pressure peaks at shoulders and pelvis are cushioned, not passed on. Who it suits Back and stomach sleepers who want to sink in as little as possible Also for heavier sleepers: the high density supports reliably Uncomplicated about the base — works on flexible as well as rigid slatted frames Construction & materials Core: perforated 100 % natural latex (pincore latex), firmness 3 (density 90 kg/m³), total height approx. 14 cm Cover: cotton drill quilted with new wool (winter side) and cotton (summer side) Tested for harmful substances and certified by eco-INSTITUT Benefits at a glance Very high support — especially on your stomach and back Exceptionally durable and dimensionally stable thanks to the high latex density Permeable to moisture and breathable for a dry sleeping climate Firm, but with a little more give at the surface? Then the Comfortline Firm with its sandwich construction is worth a look. We are happy to advise you — by phone or in our showroom at Kantstraße 13, Berlin-Charlottenburg.
